Buster Cherry

Buster Cherry is the disembodied newsreader who opens The Bugle Weekly. He is credited on his first appearance as the show’s “PodCon correspondent”1 and files under the Bugle News banner, but his beat is narrower and stranger than that title suggests: across every episode in the record he is a voice and nothing more, never seated at the round table, heard only in the cold-open dispatch, the ad read, and the station ID. He is the show’s front matter made into a person.

He does two jobs. He reads the wire — the fake headlines that set up each episode’s running bit — and he reads the sponsors. He seeds; the hosts harvest. The most durable gags on the show are planted in his thirty-second opens and then litigated by Richard Greaser and Rod Palmer for the next hour.

The dispatch slot

The cold open is a fixed format slot, and it is his. Its standing formula is a weather report: “Well, it’s been a strange week, folks. This is Buster Cherry, and I wanna thank you for joining me today”2 — a line Greaser echoes straight back in the first minutes of the same episode, the handshake that starts the show. On holidays the slot rotates through the Bugle bench but keeps coming back to him: “This is Buster Cherry, and I hope you are having a wonderful Christmas this year,”3 and on the stoner calendar, “Happy 04/20, everyone. This is Buster Cherry reporting in.”4

He also carries the show’s self-description across the handoff — “You are listening to the Bugle Weekly, the most thermodynamically sound podcast in the world”5 — a tagline the paid feed inherits unchanged, where he reads it as a premium station ID over the paywall.6 On the premium cold open he is the one who names the principals: “This is Buster Cherry, and you are listening to a premium episode of the Bugle Weekly. Here are your hosts, Richard Grieser and Rod Palmer.”7 The rest of his premium work is the outro that admits the whole preview was a preview, and folds the sales ask into the thesis — “you will have to choose to be subversive by buying the episode using the lightning network.”8

The wire

His dispatches are where the episode’s dominant bit is planted. His very first report is a public-health bulletin from a Bitcoin conference: “many women expressed their discomfort due to a large number of men walking around with erections due to Dennis Porter being present at the event,”1 a bit the hosts then carry through three separate callbacks. The same broadcast plants the banana — “Justin Sun gave Ross a banana, a just stop ordinals protester was arrested before being able to throw tomato soup on the ordinals section”9 — which becomes the pretext for a forty-minute argument over whether Ross is a shitcoiner. He also files the meme weather, reporting that the conference passed with “nothing out of the ordinary happened besides a couple of lackluster Lynn Alden is hot chants”10 — the Lyn Alden is hot rallying cry downgraded to something security merely braces for.

His largest continuing story is the abduction of Dennis Porter. Across three winter episodes his cold opens run it as a hostage saga: the White House confirms Porter “is indeed missing and that he was captured by the North Koreans in a daring plot” to stop American politicians being orange-pilled;11 a week later he reports “Buster Cherry reporting in again with some sad news. Dennis Porter still remains in North Korea”;12 and by the new year Kim Jong un has weaponized the captive, announcing the nation “would lead the world in quantum computing” with Porter’s help, with the intention of claiming Satoshi‘s coins and nothing Hunter Beast or Nic Carter could do about it.13 From the same silence he coins a season: with Porter unable to orange-pill anyone, “Paper Bitcoin winter is looking like it’s gonna be a cold one, folks,”14 pinning the whole bear market on the hostage rather than macro.

The ad reads

The sponsor slot is his other half. He voices the Plebs Slop spot — the Bugle’s parody of the do-nothing pleb podcast — pitching “content that affirms you doing nothing” to people who “sit on your couch smoking weed and shit posting about David Bailey on Twitter,” and naming its co-hosts Citizen Pleb and Toxic Plebnaute.1516 He reads the White Boy Summer PSA and, unusually, signs it — “This is White Boy Summer, folks. Don’t forget to enjoy every moment of it. This is Buster Cherry”17 — which is the only identification of the PSA voice in the episode and the reason the bundle’s own speaker map cannot be trusted on that episode’s bookends. He runs the subscriber roll call, the recurring supporter list that doubles as the show’s cast of regular plebs,18 and he delivers the paywall pitch as its own bit: the full episode is available only if “you will have to choose to be subversive by buying the episode on the Fountain Podcasting app using the Lightning Network.”19

His reads are not always advertisements. He runs the show’s testimonial choruses — the cold open in which a line of Bugleverse regulars each affirm that Gloria Zhao is hot, his own contribution being “This is Buster Cherry, and there is no doubt”20 — and he plants the odd editorial jab for the hosts to grow, as when a throwaway line that “we can’t count on Gen X” seeds a full generational teardown an hour later.21 His Christmas segment closes on the Bugle’s house moral, restated as the only gift worth giving: “Give the gift of being a good example in a world that lacks them.”22

The wire in print

Between episodes the dispatch does not go dark. The Bugle News banner Buster reads over the air also runs as a text feed under the same masthead — the same wire, set in type — and it keeps his two standing on-air formats alive in his absence: the breaking bulletin and the obituary. Reading the feed is the closest thing on record to watching him work outside the cold-open slot.

The breaking bulletin

The wire’s resting register is the all-caps alarm, the print form of the “🚨BREAKING” open he voices at the top of each show. His largest continuing broadcast story is a fixture here long before it reaches the microphone: the feed had already installed Dennis Porter in a string of industry sinecures — “Knotzis Tap Dennis Porter For Senior Role As ‘Chief Bullish Announcements Strategist’” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-06-24 — months before North Korea took him and Buster’s cold opens turned the story into a hostage saga.

The feed also runs the same “is hot” chorus his testimonial cold opens are built from, only inverted into grief: “The several dozen women in the Bitcoin community all devastated to learn that @RealRossU has a wife” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-01-29 — the print counterpart to the round of Ross-and-Gloria Zhao adulation he narrates on air. And it keeps the paper-Bitcoin panic warm between episodes, pinning the threat on the same grumps the show does: “Bitcoin influencers like Pledditor are the biggest threat to (paper) Bitcoin” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-06-29 — a straight-faced escalation of the paper-Bitcoin menace with Pledditor cast as the villain.

A second bulletin genre is the institutional-conquest story, where Bugle News reports its own unstoppable expansion as world news: “Bugle News acquires @BitcoinMagazine in an all non-kyc cigarette deal” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2026-04-01 — reported, per the wire, by Reuters. The takeover comes with defections in its wake — “Frank is leaving Bitcoin Magazine to join a more prestigious journalistic institution, Bugle News” — poaching Frank Corva — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-10-24 — and quiet infiltration of the enemy: “Bitcoin companies integrating Bugle News into their company slack channels” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2024-06-18.

The obituary desk

The other recurring format is the death notice, filed in the same devastated tone Buster uses to report Porter “still remains in North Korea.” The wire’s dead are invented plebs given full funerary prose: “Bugle News is devastated to share that Timothy Cumfield has passed away at the age of 45” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2026-05-29 — obliterated, the report specifies, by a driverless Waymo. The obituaries close on the same house theology his Christmas segment does, only routed through the show’s catechism: Randy “Haulin’ Sats” Winston “Is In Heaven, Pleb Sloppin’ With Jesus Now” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-11-15 — the Plebs Slop gag he voices in the ad slot, promoted to an afterlife.

Credentials matter

The feed shares his one editorial conviction, the same tagline he reads over the paywall. Off the air it becomes a manifesto: “journalism is not marketing. It’s what we do”; the Bugle’s reporters “hold B.A.’s in journalism. Real, thermodynamically sound journalism” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-04-24 — the print echo of the “most thermodynamically sound podcast in the world” station ID Buster carries across the handoff. The masthead’s own hosts treat the wire as the benchmark for a slur they otherwise reserve for the competition, Rod Palmer measuring a rival outlet against it: “so many red flags. so much pleb slop” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2026-05-14.

Who reads the wire

Buster’s defining trait — a voice and nothing more, never seated at the table — has a print corollary: the byline with no name. The wire is authored by everyone and no one, a running joke Rod Palmer states plainly: “every group chat thinks one or more of their members is behind bugle news. some of them are right” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2025-10-13. Only Richard Greaser, the founder, ever cops to running the room, and only to complain about it: “Why do I need to be the dress code police in the Bugle news room?” — @GreaserRichard, 2025-04-24. The disembodied voice and the anonymous byline are the same editorial choice made twice: the Bugle News desk has no face on purpose.
