Gloria Zhao is the Bugleverse’s Bitcoin Core maintainer — in the show’s account, the developer who “merged a change, relaxing the default limits on how much nonfinancial data” could be embedded in a transaction, and thereby lit the fuse on the Core–Knots war.¹ The flagship Plebslop Pulitzer Prize Pieces essay treats that merge as the trigger of the whole conflict, then declines to relitigate it and asks instead the question the series exists to answer: “How did Gloria Zhao become the person who merged that change?”²

From that single act she acquires two mutually reinforcing careers on the show. She is the villain the plebs cannot stop yelling at — and, because she is a “female Bitcoin core developer” who happens to be better at their own jobs than they are, she is also the object of the newsroom’s most durable running bit: that Gloria is hot.

“Gloria is hot”

The bit is the Lyn Alden Is Hot doctrine extended onto a Core maintainer. Charlie Spears supplies the programme — Bitcoin Core can win back cultural control if it will only sexualize its developers — which Richard Greaser and Rod Palmer compress into a three-word slogan: “Sex merges PRs.”³ It slots into Greaser’s general hot-or-not ranking of the ecosystem, delivered as production advice to a guest recording an audiobook: the female characters should be voice-cloned from real Bitcoiner women, “the hot girls be Lynn Alden or Gloria Zhao.”⁴

The bit’s most elaborate form is the beard theory. From a panel Gloria shared with Shinobi, Greaser reports: “it was the first time that I learned that Gloria didn’t have a beard.”⁵ The bearded avatar, he theorises, functions like a JK Rowling pen name — lending legitimacy to code the plebs cannot actually read, since “they can’t read the code, but they can read her LinkedIn profile.”

It reaches liturgical form in the cold open of Pioneers Frame The Conversation, a testimonial chorus of regulars — Philmore Katz, Pastor Jeffs, Buster Cherry and producer Kailey Welch — each affirming the proposition in turn: “This is Fillmore Katz, and just like pastor Jeffs, I think Gloria is hot.”⁶ A listener later encodes it as an acronym; Greaser decodes “g z I h” on air as “Gloria is hot,” and confesses he had missed it entirely.⁷ By Thanksgiving it is filed among the newsroom’s blessings — Greaser is “grateful that Gloria Zhao is hot,” in the same list as the Bugle crew and cigarettes.⁸ The clearest sign it is stated policy rather than one crush is Greaser’s benchmark for consequence-free pleb behaviour: “going on Twitter and and posting that Gloria isn’t hot” costs nothing.⁹

The competence problem

Under the joke is a sincere injury, which the show names outright. The chorus works, Greaser says, because the grumps have been beaten “that a Bitcoin core developer is a better podcaster than you” — worse, “a female Bitcoin core podcaster,” and half their age.¹⁰ The guest Muck states it as confession: “with Gloria, I think for me, it boils down to a sort of vague jealousy,” of a person who “does all sorts of commits” — a threat he claims to feel in his body.¹¹

The obsession has a physical shrine. Muck places a conspiracy “wall of paranoia” of Gloria clippings, “like that episode of Always Sunny with Charlie and the board,” in a back room of Bitcoin University and attributes it to Matthew Kratter.¹² Her credentials, meanwhile, inflate into lore: weighed against a rival who studied “at the community college,” Gloria is offered as “Satoshi’s daughter.”¹³

The euthanizer

As villain she is assigned the blame the hosts would rather not carry themselves — Rod is candid that he would rather Gloria take the fall than do it himself. In one on-air eulogy Bitcoin is “finally euthanized by Gloria.”¹⁴ A resurfaced clip in which she declines to get excited about hanging out with carnivore rednecks is, Rod argues, enraging precisely because it is accurate: the plebs know they are each “a redneck retard who just eats way too much meat and has high cholesterol as a result”; what they cannot take is the contempt.¹⁵

Rod’s structural counter is to deny that Gloria is a person to be angry at: “Bitcoin Core is not Shinobi. It’s not Gloria. It’s not Greg Maxwell,” but an institution — a story people use to reach consensus, subject to the same legitimacy decay as the schools and courts.¹⁶ The complaint that the developers never explained themselves is, he adds, simply false — “Gloria did a podcast with Shinobi,” among other venues.¹⁷ But because the devs do not talk to plebs directly, the translators absorb the beating: “if they’re mad at Gloria they’re yelling at Shinobi.”¹⁸ Greaser proposes formalising the arrangement — every Core dev should be issued “a slew of influencers.”¹⁹

At the paranoid end of the arc, plebs believed “Shinobi and Gloria” were “working in cahoots, with George Soros” to break Bitcoin into a host for spam.²⁰ And once the culture war is notionally won, the leftover grievance still resolves to “Gloria’s fault. This is Shinobi’s fault” — which the show diagnoses as “core derangement.”²¹

Bullied out

Gloria settles into the plebs’ standing roster of bullying targets, alongside “Dan Held, Odell” — “They love bullying Gloria.”²² Her fate becomes a cautionary tale used to convert others: Muck claims to have flipped Natalie Brunell to Knots in Lugano under the explicit threat, “you see what happened with Gloria.”²³ Eventually the campaign is reported as having succeeded, in a throwaway clause: “Gloria was finally bullied, out of her position as the core maintainer.”²⁴ Thereafter she is the “extraordinarily hot former bitcoin core maintainer,” recast in Greaser’s melodrama as the villain that a heroic Luke steps in to replace — without, the essay notes, anything structural actually changing.²⁵

The war that ousted her rests on a contradiction the show flags once and drops. Portland Hodl points out that Knots ships “the same code that’s written by Gloria,” merely patched — “literally Bitcoin Core at the core with a, a fun new GUI to use with more more sliders and more selectors.”²⁶ The Knotzis run the code they hound her for writing.

Note on the name

The ASR renders her as Gloria Zhou, Gloria Zoe and Gloria Zao, but most often as the bare first name “Gloria,” which — with “core maintainer” or the v30 dispute nearby — is enough to fix the referent; almost every beat above was resolved that way. She is not to be confused with Gloria Sheinbaum, the Mexican president the show name-checks only for the coincidence, noting it is “just a bad month for Gloria’s.”²⁷

irl: Gloria Zhao is a real Bitcoin Core maintainer. The relaxation of the default OP_RETURN / relay data limits in Bitcoin Core, and the Core-versus-Knots split around it, are real events the show narrates as melodrama.
