Character
Barnminer
Henry’s note: rebuilt from the beat index — 33 beats across 15 episodes, coverage COMPLETE. It was a stub until now.
The Bugleverse’s home-mining Bitcoin cowboy: proprietor of Barn Jerky, a small-batch spicy-beef-jerky operation run off Lightning, and — by the hosts’ own repeated accounting — the single most devoted listener and booster the show has. He is the rare figure the Bugle claims as one of us rather than a target: a jerky-slinging, cigarette-smoking, ATF-inflected family man who mines Bitcoin in a barn, donates his revenue to the Bugle, and hates the payment rail he uses to do it.
He appears mostly as a voice in the boost feed and a name in the outro thank-yous, but he sits down as a guest exactly once, on Behind The Podcast episode 8 — an emergency fourth-choice booking that becomes the definitive Barnminer document.

The complier by adoption
Barnminer enters the record early, in absentia, as a compliance recruit. In episode 2, Rod suggests he get a money transmitter licence for his Lightning node and lays down the show’s guest policy on the back of it: “If you want to be a guest on the Google Weekly, you have to be compliant.”1 A week later Greaser folds him into the Church of Compliance as a fellow traveller — “just like Barn Miner, he he’s definitely on the compliance bandwagon with us” — the home miner who stands to benefit most from a subsidised mining industry.2
The joke, later, is that he is nothing of the sort. When he finally appears, his defining trait is a pointed non-compliance — non-KYC jerky, non-KYC cigarettes, GrapheneOS for his kids — undercut only by his one confessed sin: he uses Lightning, which he despises, because that is how you sell jerky.
The one guest appearance (2025)
Greaser opens Behind The Podcast 8 by admitting Barnminer is the emergency fourth pick after three cancellations — “it’s been kind of a chaotic night” — which the guest accepts with a deadpan he sustains for ninety minutes: “I appreciate being the fourth suggestion for the show.”3
Rod’s first question is not about Bitcoin but about the jerky: “are you slang in spicy beef jerky?”4 Barnminer had smoked seven or eight pounds the previous Saturday and was already sold out, and had carried it through airport security after having his daughter Google whether it was allowed — which Greaser turns into the episode’s thesis, that women cannot be trusted with compliance questions: “I would never trust a girl to Google something and let me know whether or not it was against the law or if it was compliant.”5 Greaser then coins non-KYC jerky (“there’s a lot of demand in the market for some non KYC jerky”),6 and narrates an off-mic cigarette handoff for the audio-only audience: “we’re not doing video, but I just handed Barminer a pack of non KYC cigarettes. And now he’s throwing the trash on my typewriter.”7 Barnminer, who smoked a pack a day for twenty years before quitting, supplies the register the whole appearance runs in — a gun-owner’s disappointment that the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is not a firearms exemption: “I thought that SBR meant for, you know, short barrel rifles.”8
The back half is a single long riff on protecting your children from the wrong orange-piller. Barnminer volunteers that his teenage son “doesn’t give a fuck about what dad says,” which prompts Greaser’s orange-pill godfather — a designated backup Bitcoiner “essentially, like a backup plan” to pill the kid when the father no longer can.9 The title beat is Greaser’s shotgun-on-the-porch protocol for a father who catches his sixteen-year-old daughter watching a Robert Breedlove interview: “Do you pull your shotgun out and start tweeting at Robert Breedlove pictures that he needs to stay the fuck away from your daughter?”10 Along the way Greaser coins orange-pill Eskimo Brothers — sharing an orange-piller with your partner — and makes Dennis Porter the worst-case scenario.11 The one orange-piller Barnminer says he’d actually respect is Pledditor: he’d concede “the orange pill was it was good, but the guy that gave it to her was wrong.”12 His own parenting is surveillance-forward — he started his son on “a graphene phone” so “he was not tracked and spied on,” conceded to an iPhone after a year of complaints, and now has “the ability to add an app that tracks everything.”13
Two lighter set-pieces close him out. Asked whether Lyn Alden is hot, he answers with a consensus mechanism — “I think she has two ears too… proof of ear” — and is christened a “two lobed truther” for it.14 And he roasts Piez‘s hundred-sat boost live on air — “A 100 sats, dude, is kinda weak” — before Rod’s defence (Piez boosts every podcast on Fountain before anyone has even tweeted about it) earns a grudging “Okay. I’ll forgive him. Still weak, though."15
"I hate lightning. It sucks.”
Barnminer’s signature heresy is stated flat on the Bugle’s own show: “I hate lightning. It sucks… I use it because people use it, and I sell jerky,” which is “50% of my revenue.”16 The Barn Jerky economics are roughly thirty hours a month at about twenty dollars an hour, and the entire point is to give the money away. He hand-delivers “over a 100000¢” — 100,000 sats — to the Bugle, insists on thinking of it in fiat (“it was, like, a $120, fiat”), and Rod immediately re-denominates it “a 120 USDT. That’s how we do it, the tax.”17 The exchange had already been enshrined in the 2024 recap as the show’s model closed value-for-value loop — “He boosts us. He engages with us in v four v” — Barnminer boosts, the show buys his jerky, and Rod pronounces the whole thing “a thermodynamically sound venture.”18
He does not, however, boost on Fountain. He explains that an unnamed affiliate of the Ungovernable Misfits “basically rug pulled me… he is affiliated with the, ungovernable guys” and shut down the Alby node he was hosted on — a grievance he leaves deliberately anonymous, and which Rod waves off: “You’re the probably the person who’s listened to the most and contributed to the most to us, so you don’t have to make excuses.”19 And in the appearance’s most quietly telling beat, the drunk jerky guy turns out to have quiet institutional pull: he lobbied Green Candle’s Brandon through PODCONF approval. “So he owes his PodConf approval to Barn Miner? Correct. I lobbied for him.”20 He also treats Fundamentals’ catchphrase as scripture, quoting “That’s so gay” as canon — a line, Rod notes, that people “have made stickers out of.”21
The canary in the coal mine
After his one sit-down, Barnminer reverts to his natural habitat — the boost feed and the outro — where the hosts increasingly treat him as an institution. Greaser names his structural function outright: “Barminer is like the canary in the coal mine of of grumpiness,” the early-warning system for podcasting 2.0 discontent, whose complaints alerted the show to a “civil war” over Keysend versus LNURL.22 His boosts routinely scold: he corrects Greaser’s journalism (“as a credentialed journalist, Richard certainly should have known that Run the Jewels were at a Bitcoin conference”), which Rod converts into a diagnosis — Barnminer is “a good example of not… focusing your time and energy on the right things,” and “I’d rather it be he spend that time making jerky.”23 By episode 98 the bit has inverted: he sends a boost with no message, because “sometimes he says to be non compliant boost and I don’t wanna explain what that is.”24
He is also the show’s most reliable supplier of physical artifacts. The outros catalogue his gifts as lore inventory: a “precision screwdriver” and a forty-hours-per-week Zippo,25 “really cool Zippo lighters” and a precision drill for the hosts,26 and — landing as a callback a full year after his appearance — “a baseball yarmulke” mailed to Greaser for Christmas, which Fundamentals rates “the least holy yarmulke ever made, but also the funniest.”27 His jerky, meanwhile, has become an on-mic sponsorship-by-gift: Greaser now eats “spicy beef jerky… while recording,”28 and the Barn Jerky read gets worked into unrelated segments, including a carnivore-trucking bit — “don’t you wish you had Barn Miner Jerky with you when you’re on the road?”29 In Greaser’s periodic on-air audit of the guest book, Barnminer is filed alongside Frank Corva as a gentile — “Barn Miner was not a Jew” — in the running census that opens the show’s editorial-doctrine bit.30
Note on the name
The ASR cannot hold him. Across fifteen episodes he is transcribed Barn Miner, Barm Miner, Bonn Miner, Barminer, Bar Miner, VonMiner, Barnliner, Barmire, Darmire, Our Meyer and Barweiner — never once “Barnminer” as one word. Almost every beat above was resolved from context rather than spelling; the aliases: exist so the next pass keeps him.
irl: The value-for-value gift economy, Fountain boosts, Keysend-vs-LNURL, and GrapheneOS are all real fixtures of the Bitcoin podcasting-2.0 scene the show inhabits — which is why a listener who mails the hosts a Zippo can become a recurring character without anyone explaining how.
