Dick Whitman is the Bugleverse’s archetypal Bitcoin-Twitter purity-tester — known almost always by his handle, the Ghost of Dick Whitman — a reflexive shitcoin-caller who scans the timeline for anyone touching a non-Bitcoin token and reports them. He is never a guest and never in the room; he exists as an X account the hosts hold up as a fixed point, the man against whom the show measures how “maxi” a given enforcer is. His constant co-defendant is Pledditor, with whom he is repeatedly paired as a matched set of snitches.

The nym (2024)

He enters the record as a suspect. Following a claim relayed from David Bailey that Barron Trump runs a secret Bitcoin-Twitter alias, Greaser volunteers his prime candidate: “And I I have long suspected that it was Ghost of Dick Whitman.”¹ The proposed method is a witch hunt, and the offered evidence is “the aristocratic autistic arrogance” of the posting.¹ The identification is never resolved — it is the show floating that its purest maximalist voice might be a teenager born to the presidency.

By the end of the year he has hardened into a unit of measure. Describing the shitcoin intolerance Trump had pretended to sign up for, Rod reaches for two names as the gold standard: “totally like like the ghost of of Dick Whitman, Stefan Lavere, like people who did not tolerate shitcoinery.”²

irl: “Dick Whitman” is the birth name of Mad Men’s Don Draper — a man living under an assumed identity — which is the evident source of the “Ghost of Dick Whitman” handle.

The purity reflex

The character’s function crystallizes in The Future Is Wrapped, whose cold open pairs him with Pledditor as the two enforcers mobilizing against the meme-coin order — and diagnoses their structural weakness in the same breath: “Already, Plattator and Dick Whitman are plotting on how to correct humanity’s course. But in a world without Gary Gensler at the helm of the SEC, what power do they really have?”³ Their snitching, the joke runs, only ever worked because there was a Gensler-run SEC to snitch to.

The same episode frames the reflex as premeditated. Asked who will be first to accuse the newly freed Ross Ulbricht of shitcoining, Greaser answers that the tweets are already written: “that both Dick Whitman and Platteter already have tweets drafted.”⁴

He is a fixed entry in the show’s roll call of self-appointed maximalists. Arguing that even North Korea has out-maxi’d the enforcer class, Greaser runs the canonical list — “than Corey, than David, than Terrence Yang, then Platter, then Dick Whitman, then all these guys”⁵ — seating Whitman among Cory Klippsten, David Bailey, Terrence Yang and Pledditor.

The most generous reading of the type is a guest’s. In The World Is A Podcast, Rob Wallace recasts Whitman and the Pledditor cohort not as a nuisance but as a necessary organ: “Bitcoin has its immune system, and I feel like Dick Whitman is a is a part of that.”⁶ The bit being praised is Whitman’s own gatekeeping, quoted moments earlier: “hey. This guy talks about crypto. Don’t fucking bring him up at all, please, because this is Bitcoin only.”⁷ The chapter also preserves a Whitman conspiracy theory — that a Bitcoin news outlet was secretly the Krasenstein brothers⁸ — which Wallace is made to deny.

XRP and the timeline

By late 2025 his defining tic is narrowed to a single ticker. Naming him as an exemplar slop-peddler “spoon feeding people pep slop,” Greaser reduces the act to reflexive filler — “go goes to Dick Whitman. He’s out there just” — the punchline being “just a reminder XRP is a shitcoin,” with the confirmation “We know Dick Whitman.”⁹ Rod’s picture of the resulting echo chamber is a timeline “completely full of ghost of Dick Boettman” declaring that the entire top 100 “is a scam, is a shitcoin”¹⁰ — the ASR mangling his name to “Dick Boettman,” but the register is his exactly.

The bit becomes a mirror the hosts hold up to complainers. Cataloguing everyone who can no longer grumble about their own feed without embarrassment, Rod lands on him — “it goes to Dick Metwin’s mad about Casper bots or XRP on his timeline” — and delivers the verdict “Dick, look in the mirror.”¹¹ The same reflex, dated to the day before broadcast, recurs as “ghost of dick women posting of XRPs as shitcoin.”¹² And his absence is diagnostic too: measuring a scandal that failed to catch, Greaser notes the tell that it hadn’t landed — “We don’t see Dick Whitman calling Corey the retard of the day or anything like that yet.”¹³

Fixations

Whitman comes equipped with a personal cosmology the show treats as settled fact. Rod cites it to open a run of Antarctica theorizing: “so Dick Whitman believes in an ice wall. He thinks that you go down there, you hit the ice wall.”¹⁴ — a flat-earth belief attributed to him without comment, as if it were on the record.

He also has a designated pop-culture nemesis. Mapping the value-for-value crowd’s resentment of a musician onto a known rivalry, Rod explains they treat Ainsley Costello “the way that, like, you know, Ghost of Whitman thinks of, Taylor Swift”¹⁵ — establishing an unexplained standing grievance against Taylor Swift.

His purest tribute is delivered by way of an absence. Arguing that gold has no genuine maximalist culture, Greaser measures the gap by the missing man: “Ghost of Dick Whitman. Who who’s the gold version of Ghost of Dick Whitman? He better be shitting on” silver the way Bitcoiners shit on shitcoins.¹⁶ There isn’t one — which is, to the show, proof that gold lacks a soul.

Note on the name

Even by the corpus’s standards he is hard to pin. The ASR renders him as Dick Boettman, Dick Metwin and, memorably, ghost of dick women, and the “Ghost of Dick Whitman / Ghost of Whitman” handle is dropped as often as the bare surname. The greater hazard is the show’s own Richard “Dick” Greaser: a name-match scan cannot tell the co-host from the account, and every beat here had to be resolved by whether “Dick” was speaking or being spoken about. He is always the latter.

irl: A purity-testing pseudonymous shitcoin-hawk is a recognizable Bitcoin-Twitter figure-type; the show declines to fix “Dick Whitman” to any single real account, which is what lets him stand in for the whole genre.
