The Bugles is the Bugle‘s Bitcoin podcasting award show — announced on The Bugle Weekly as a live-streamed ceremony with real trophies and real nominations, hosted by Richard Greaser and Rod Palmer, and justified throughout by the doctrine that mainstream award shows are intelligence-agency operations the plebs are entitled to copy. It is the “premier Bitcoin podcasting awards”1 — or, as Rod corrects himself, “The only Bitcoin Podcasting Awards.”1

Origin: the Greaser Awards (2024)

The idea starts as a grievance. Having written off the Nobel and the Pulitzer as scams handed to war criminals and corporate media, Rod proposes the hosts simply invent their own — that Greaser hand himself the first “greaser.” Greaser upgrades the coinage on the spot: “That’s not a bad idea. I mean, maybe it would be the Greaser Awards or maybe it’d be the Bugle Awards.”2

The announcement (December 2024)

Seven months later it becomes a real project. Rod announces it as a live event: “So we’re gonna have a show it’s called the Butils. It’s going to be live streamed in January. There’s going to be real trophies.”3 The founding rationale is that award shows are covert cultural infrastructure — the claim being that the CIA built the Academy Awards to reward its own content, so Bitcoin podcasters deserve the same. Rod grounds the mandate in the show’s self-appointed credentials — “we are the only credentialed journalists in Bitcoin” — and closes the case with the operative principle: “If the CIA gets five or six or seven award shows, Bitcoiners deserve one.”3

The same episode debuts the livestream-distribution bit. Instructing a listener travelling to “Sats by Southwest” to lobby Oscar and the decision-makers at Fountain to carry the show, Rod routes the request through his customary deniability: “you should tell them that people are saying that that Fountain should livestream” — then disclaims it as merely what people are saying.4

The Oscars for Bitcoin podcasting (January 2025)

By Onwards and Upwards the elevator pitch is fixed: the Bugles are “essentially, you know, the Oscars for Bitcoin podcasting.”5 Greaser supplies the theory in full — the show is one of the ways “we build culture and, you know, rip control out of the hands of the intelligence agencies,” because “Everybody knows that the Oscars is essentially a CIA circle jerk where individuals that are making content for the CIA give themselves awards,” and “You’re not gonna get non compliant content creators winning an Oscar.” He dates the decline of Hollywood precisely: “ever since the smoking bans in Hollywood came, the CIA created content sucked.”5

The same episode carries the in-show promo, an ad-read montage — some listen for macro analysis, some for price predictions, some for epic rants, “And some listen to at least forty hours per week regardless of the topic” — resolving to the one night “we all listen to find out which Bitcoin podcasts are the most thermodynamically sound”: “The Bugles, hosted by Richard Grieser and Rod Palmer. Live this January.”6

The wildfire delay (January 2025)

The January date does not hold. The trophies, Rod reports, burned in the Los Angeles wildfires — a loss he attributes not to accident but to sabotage, “the Fed has spruced a CIA asset” who “use that as an opportunity to burn down our storage unit.”7 CryptoCloaks is announced as the replacement fabricator, pushing the ceremony to late February or early March. Rod guarantees that cigarette smoking will be permitted at the show — a direct rebuke of the Hollywood smoking bans blamed for the CIA’s creative decline.7

The full pitch (February 2025)

By 40 Hours Per Week the show has a scope. It is “the Bitcoin the premier Bitcoin podcasting awards,” slated for Q1 2025 with no hard date.1 PodConf is enlisted to help stage it despite the hosts’ standing distrust — “One thing we don’t always agree with PodConf
 we certainly can never trust BotComp. But we both share a very important vision” — with any PodConf ads to be “very well labeled.”1 Greaser ranks the event against the field: “bigger than the Sailor one hundred k party,” bigger than “the Satoshi roundtable that’s happening in Dubai,” bigger than “the Bitcoin magazine conference even” (“Sailor” is Michael Saylor).1 He demands a national holiday for Bitcoin podcasters; Rod adds “discounts at Olive Garden, just like veterans do.”1

The guest list is aspirational. “We’ve extended invitations to the Four Horsemen of Podkoff. We extended invitations to Dennis Porter to be a part and many more”8 — with listeners enlisted to pressure the named influencers into attending, and Peter McCormack and the president both on the wishlist. Greaser holds out hope for Trump through the family: “maybe we can get the president. He said maybe. We’ll have to ping Barron because Barron understands the importance of podcast
 the only reason that the president did Rogan was because of Barron” (Joe Rogan).8

The casting extends to the show’s designated disapprovers. Pledditor is invited despite the hosts never seeing eye to eye with him, and Greaser immediately doubts he will clear the bar he sets for others: “Pledder might be hard to appease because he has a pretty strict purity test when it comes to participating in something.”9 Rod’s staging solves the problem by seating Pledditor and Mike Brock as the Bugles’ hecklers — the Statler-and-Waldorf balcony act — “an honor to have Platter and Mike Brock and they could be kind of like sitting up in the balcony,” where they would give “their honest opinion, counting, you know, impeachable offenses, fighting the shit winners.”10

Standing (February 2025)

The Bugles are last declared “the most important event of 2025” and an annual fixture going forward — “which is the Bitcoin podcasting awards” — still with no date set.11 Recruitment runs on the show’s usual enforcement mechanism: “I’ve reached out to some of you. I will start nagging you publicly if you don’t respond,” backed by the threat to “make the meme of you that we think is the most funny.”11

Note on the name

The ASR does not spell the show consistently even within a single episode. Across the six that announce or promote it, “the Bugles” arrives as the Butils, the Buell Awards, the bureaus, and the Beagles (with a “Beagle award”). The two founding names — the Greaser Awards and the Bugle Awards — are genuine in-universe proposals from the origin beat, not mishearings, and are kept in the aliases as alternate titles for the same event.
