Character

Roger Ver

Henry’s note: rebuilt from the beat index — 10 beats across 9 episodes, coverage COMPLETE. The prior body was a mechanical mention-scan (an “Appearances” list with mention counts and a run of news links); it is replaced here with what the beats actually support.

Roger Ver is the Bugleverse’s Bitcoin Judas: the man who called himself Bitcoin Jesus, forked the chain into Bitcoin Cash, and is filed ever after as the false prophet a canon requires. He is rarely a subject in his own right — he is a fixed point on the show’s moral compass, the name invoked whenever a Bitcoiner needs a warning about where purity testing, grievance, and forking off finally lead. To “be Roger Ver” is to lose an argument, decide the network failed your test, and split off to found a lesser coin.

The coinage lands whole in The Orange Wedding. Working from the premise that Jesus was Satoshi, the segment reasons that if a savior claimed the name “Bitcoin Jesus” and then stabbed the small blockers in the back, he must be the betrayer: “Roger Ver is actually Bitcoin Judas. I agree.”1 Rod Palmer disclaims originality — “I’m not the first person to say this” — and Richard Greaser supplies the theological rank a beat earlier, the false prophet.

The passion of Bitcoin Cash

The religious frame predates the Judas line. In The Influencer Super Cycle, Greaser reports Ver’s comeback as a schism inside a schism — “some of the BSV shells have given up on Craig Wright and are moving over to Bitcoin Cash”2 — with the Craig Wright holdouts splitting into two denominations: one that holds Ver spent forty days in the desert fasting and preparing to be crucified, another that he has already been resurrected to save Bitcoin. Greaser sets a falsifiability test for the second coming: he’ll take it seriously if Netanyahu begs Joe Biden to crucify Ver and he then rises.

The same episode fixes Ver’s place in the show’s cosmology. Rod’s aphorism — “you don’t change Bitcoin. Bitcoin changes you”3 — is delivered as the lesson of Bitcoin Cash, the risk being that “you might end up believing Roger Ver or Calvin Iyer or Craig Wright. That’s a risk you take.” Ver sits in the show’s rogues’ triptych alongside Wright and Calvin Ayre from the first appearance on.

The all-purpose cautionary tale

Once minted, the archetype is portable, and the show spends it freely.

He is the martyr who confused being wrong with being censored. Arguing that bigots should be allowed to talk, Fundamentals warns that silencing them only produces men who “end up like Roger Ver with some psychotic idea that they’ve been censored when they’ve just been wrong.”4 He is the libertarian’s shitcoin: mapping party politics onto chains, Greaser calls the Libertarian Party “a shitcoin fork of Bitcoin,”5 a reading Rod sets up by naming Ver the “libertarian Bitcoin cashier.” And he is the cracked purist, the terminal case of the Nirvana effect: because the network “wasn’t the perfect thing that he wanted” and “other people failed his purity test,” he curdled into Bitcoin derangement syndrome and forked off.6 Rod immediately adds Vlad Costea to the same ledger — the point of the beat being that the Knots faction is on the identical trajectory.

The vacancy left by his fall is a running gag. When the Dennis Porter deification bit escalates to demigod, Rod caps it with “the second coming of Bitcoin Jesus,” since the first one — Ver — “is going to prison.”7 The office of Bitcoin Jesus, in other words, is open.

Maxi Madness: be Roger Ver

The archetype becomes a live threat in Apologizing To Absolutely No One, where Rod’s central conspiracy is that PODCONF is stoking timeline vitriol in order to “steal Maxi Madness. There was a lot of people talking about forking Maxi Madness.”8 Greaser reframes the would-be tournament fork as a block-size war and casts the roles accordingly: anyone who forks Maxi Madness away from the Bugle is choosing to “be the next Roger Ver,” the next Jihan Wu, the next Craig Wright. The Bugle claims the longest chain and the proper credentials; the challengers get the closing benediction — “Have your Bitcoin cash Maxi Madness. Be Roger Ver.”

The one credit to his name

The single beat that gives Ver a sympathetic hearing is not about Bitcoin at all. Explaining why Ross Ulbricht turned out crypto-agnostic rather than Bitcoin-only, Greaser notes that the people who actually funded the freedom campaign, “predominantly financially, were the shitcoiners. People like Roger Veer when he was in prison.”9 The kicker is aimed at the Bitcoiners, not Ver: there was “no narrative on how you shouldn’t spend your Bitcoin,” so the maximalists kept theirs and the shitcoiners paid.

His book earns the opposite treatment — the attention-starvation cure. In Monitoring The Situation, Greaser proposes: “Should we be burning Roger Veer’s book, Hygienic Gaming Bitcoin?”10 He read it, thought it sucked, and concludes that arguing with it is the only thing keeping it alive.

The timeline files the book under the same charge. Rod Palmer, placing Ver at the head of a genre, dates the whole lineage of aggrieved apostate manifestos to it:

“did you know that before mike brock’s essay era, roger ver wrote an entire book of crash out cope?” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2026-02-07

The Mike Brock comparison is the point: Hijacking Bitcoin is read not as an argument to answer but as the ur-text of a form — the loser’s memoir — with Ver credited as its inventor.

The timeline files: the compliance-violation years

Henry’s note: where the episodes treat Ver as a fixed archetype, the Bugleverse accounts treat him as a live case running in real time — arrest, jail, book tour, release, all logged as an in-universe legal matter with the Bugle claiming jurisdiction. The posts below are canon; the underlying facts they satirize are held to the > irl: note at the foot of the page.

Bitcoin’s own scammer to deal with

The recurring conceit is that the tax case is a jurisdictional error — Ver is Bitcoin’s problem, and the U.S. government has no standing to prosecute a compliance violation that the network was handling internally. Rod files the objection directly:

“Roger Ver was Bitcoin’s scammer to deal with, not the U.S. Government’s. @TheJusticeDept stand down! Let us handle this compliance violation ourselves. He would’ve wanted it that way.” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2024-05-01

From there the sentencing turns into a bit about picking the correct charge. Rod grants the tax count but wants a better one:

“i don’t think roger ver should go to prison for tax fraud. i think he should go to prison for trading unregistered securities” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2024-12-11

The proposed remedy is, characteristically, that the whole thing dissolves if he simply capitulates to the maximalist position:

“roger ver needs to stop shitcoining and just buy bitcoin so he can afford to pay his taxes” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2024-12-10

And the qualified defense, which doubles as the definitive Bugleverse summary of the man:

“being annoying isn’t illegal. free roger ver” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2024-12-10

The jail bit reaches escape velocity when a head of state volunteers a cell. The Bugle’s most-liked Ver dispatch has Bukele tendering El Salvador’s prison estate:

“President Bukele Offers To Jail Roger Ver in El Salvador 🇸🇻 Bukele: ‘El Salvador prisons have big cell blocks. It’s the perfect place for him’” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2025-02-04

An earlier dispatch, credited to Bugle correspondent Ginger B Stiffin, renders the arrest in the register of a defaulted debt slave — the “Freedom Payment” gag that keeps Ver’s own liberty-branding pointed back at him:

“Roger Ver to be Returned to Master for Failure to Pay Freedom Payment” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2024-05-01

Pardon, tour, release, flex

The other half of the case is the rehabilitation circuit, reported with the same deadpan. The Bugle floats the maximal reversal — not merely a pardon but an appointment:

“REPORT: Donald Trump is expected to pardon Roger Ver on all tax fraud charges, appoint him to new White House Bitcoin Chief” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2024-12-11

The press tour that fed the pardon campaign is itself a bit. Rod first catches Ver routing around the PODCONF cartel — “paying non-PODCONF approved podcasters who aren’t eligible for PODCONF sponsorships to interview him”11 — then dismisses the marquee Tucker Carlson sit-down on pure charisma grounds:

“who cares if tucker carlson interviewed roger ver? roger is incapable of not coming across as an insufferable, annoying whiny bitch.” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2024-12-10

When release finally comes, it lands as an anticlimax on two fronts. Rod reads the free man’s spending as a taunt:

“Roger Ver is flexing and letting everyone know he can afford his taxes” — @rodpalmerhodl, 2025-07-04

— and Greaser slots the timing straight back into the archetype the episodes built, returning Ver to the schism he was born to lose:

“Roger Ver is free just in time to get involved in the Core vs Knots debate” — @GreaserRichard, 2025-10-15

That last line is the whole page in one post: the purist who forked off is sprung from prison precisely in time for the next fork.

The Bugle’s own patron

Complicating the villainy is the running gag that Ver is, in-universe, a donor to the Bugle — the archive’s Judas signs the checks:

“Roger Ver just donated to The Bugle!” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2023-05-10

The same bit-format puts him on solvency-assurance duty, the crypto-collapse cameo where the least trusted man in the room is wheeled out to vouch for the books:

“Roger Ver Assures Binance Customers That Exchange Solvent” — @bitcoin_bugle, 2023-06-07

Note on the name

The ASR cannot hold his surname steady: across these nine episodes he arrives as Roger Veer, Roger Vere, Roger Verwer, Roger Vare and Roger Barry. His book Hijacking Bitcoin is rendered “Hygienic Gaming Bitcoin,”10 and the fellow-traveller names mangle alongside him — Calvin Ayre as “Calvin Iyer,” Jihan Wu as “Jian Wu.” The aliases: carry the spellings so the next pass does not lose him. Every beat above was resolved from what the passage says, not from the spelling.

irl: Roger Ver is a real early Bitcoin investor who branded himself “Bitcoin Jesus,” backed the larger-block Bitcoin Cash fork in 2017, wrote Hijacking Bitcoin (2024), and was arrested in 2024 on U.S. tax charges — which is why the satire can move him through prison, schism, and book tour without inventing any of it.
