Fountain FM is the value-for-value podcast app that The Bugle Weekly is streamed on, “available on Android and iOS” — the rail through which listeners boost sats to the show, and by extension the payment layer of the entire Podcasting 2.0 economy the Bugle runs on. It is at once the show’s sponsor, its billing infrastructure, the leaderboard it measures the bull market against, and — in the words of its own paying audience — “a centralized enemy of Bitcoin.” The show lives with all four at once.

The anti-piracy spot
Fountain’s own recurring cold open is a reskin of the “You wouldn’t steal a car” anti-piracy PSA, turned into a value-for-value guilt trip. It escalates through the standard list to a distinctly Bugleverse crime — “You wouldn’t steal another Bitcoiner’s wife.”1 — before landing the charge: listening to Bugle Weekly without boosting “Rod and Richard Satz is stealing from journalists,” and it is against the law.2 The remedy the spot sells is streaming sats to the show on Fountain FM. The same produced read runs on Bugle Weekly 11.
The ad rail
Fountain is also where the Bugle’s fellow shows are sold. The produced spots that open episodes are, functionally, other podcasts advertised to the Bugle’s audience and pointed at the same app. The Ungovernable Misfits read invites listeners to hear “chief misfit, Max, explore ways to regain your freedom,”3 — non-compliance sold on the exact platform the compliance-obsessed Bugle takes its own money through. The Rock Paper Bitcoin spot pitches “two non compliant plebs from Pennsylvania”4 — Fundamentals and Business Cat — as an alternative to “the macro circle jerk promoted by PodConf,” and closes, as the reads always do, on “boost them SATs.” The platform is likewise where the Bugle launches its own spin-offs: the announcer uses it to unveil Greaser‘s investigative podcast into “what happened to the McDonald’s dollar menu”5 and his debut Wavlake album. On X the launch is filed as breaking news — “Episode 1 of Where Did The Dollar Menu Go is out! … Check the episode out on Fountain: … Check out the album on Wavlake” — the app and the label pointed at in one breath.

The rail runs the other way too: Fountain is a product the Bugle’s newsroom invents copy for. Greaser’s byline breaks that the “Fountain App To Offer ‘Bitcoin Cameo’ Product To Buy Favorite Podcasters”, and Rod’s reports that “Fountain Podcasters Consider Unionizing” — the platform sprouting its own labor movement, demands including free CrowdHealth memberships. See media/where-did-the-dollar-menu-go.
The leaderboard
Fountain’s chart is a stock ticker the hosts read for market signal. Greaser cites a Dennis Porter episode — “This US state is making Bitcoin part of its strategic treasury”6 — sitting at #6 on Fountain as evidence of the bull, and Rod refines it into a new indicator: momentum measured in podcast titles that begin with the word “breaking.”
The chart war
On the show the chart is a ticker read for signal; on X it is a war fought daily, and it is the single subject the Bugle accounts return to more than any other. Every rung on the leaderboard is issued as a communiqué.
Premiering #1
The arrival is framed as a coup against the incumbents. Rod announces the debut as a strike on the establishment: the podcast “has premiered #1 on Fountain’s charts. The PODCONF Industrial Complex has been put on notice.”

The rivals
The enemies list is specific and escalating. At launch Greaser frames the mission as direct combat with the patron saint of Podcasting 2.0 himself — they “knew they would be competing directly with @adamcurry in the fountain charts.”7 The nearer threat is a Linux show, and boosts are solicited as air support: “boost us so those losers at Linux Unplugged don’t beat us in the Fountain trending charts.”

The macro old guard, meanwhile, is declared spent — Rod reports the Jeff Booth / Lyn Alden axis in decline, those interviews “don’t crack the top 10 on Fountain these days … We need a hero.”8 It is the same instrument the hosts read on air as the Dennis Porter leaderboard signal — a chart doing double duty as market oracle and battlefield.
Year-end standings
The war keeps an annual scoreboard, and the Bugle reports it as breaking: “Bugle Weekly finished #11 in @fountain_app Top 40 shows of 2024.”

The deplatforming
The rivalry escalates from charts to platform access. When the Bugle boosts on behalf of Samourai Wallet, PODCONF moves to have it removed, and Rod raises the alarm: PODCONF “is attempting to get @bitcoin_bugle deplatformed by @fountain_app for supporting @SamouraiWallet with our podcast boosts.”
PODCONF makes it official in its own voice — “OPEN LETTER TO @fountain_app … You’re platforming bad actors and it must stop, or we will be forced to act.”
Fountain does not cave, and the loyalty is repaid on the spot — the “centralized enemy of Bitcoin” becomes, for one news cycle, a folk hero: “If you didn’t love Fountain before, you better love them now. They are standing up to the bullies at PODCONF.”
The boost economy
The larger half of Fountain’s presence is inbound — the boosts listeners send through it, read back on air, which the show treats as both revenue and correspondence. The doctrine comes back at the hosts through their own paywall: Ellen Hance boosts that “maintaining compliant lightning infrastructure”9 that honors our ancestors is critical, and Rod could not agree more. The economics are stated plainly — Rod solicits boosts because cigarettes are getting expensive, and a booster prices the exchange for him, offering “two KYC free cigs on me or wait a couple years and get a whole pack from the Indian reservation,”10 which lets Greaser fix the rate at 1,000 sats to the cigarette and ask for a repricing. Not every boost carries words: the last of the night from Piez is “Beer and cigarette emoji”11 and nothing else, and gets called a champ for it. And the platform’s friction is generative — a listener’s accidental double-boost prompts Rod’s “proof of bad UX,” which Greaser immediately upgrades to “Proof of revolution”12 — P O R.
On X the ledger is public and precise. Greaser posts the books like an earnings release: a single episode “acquired 101,145 Satoshis … bringing the total balance on our custodial Fountain lightning wallet to 1,042,808 satoshis.”13 The appeals never leave the subject of tobacco — “I am able to buy less cigarettes with my Bitcoin now … Please boost the Bugle Weekly more on Fountain,”14 a plea that feeds the cigarette-money economy. The imagined end state is a pension: the hosts are “all just hoping our podcast gets syndicated so we can retire and live off fountain splits royalties.”15 Years on, the ask has not evolved — Greaser’s entire caption, unadorned: “I need more fountain boosts.”

A centralized enemy of Bitcoin
The relationship is not clean, and the show does not pretend otherwise. Skate Kate indicts the platform even while paying through it: she misses a boost because “I just can’t be bothered to switch to Fountain FM each episode. They’re definitely a centralized enemy of Bitcoin.”16 Greaser hedges rather than defends — Fountain “has their downsides, but I I I still like them,” and he is willing to deal with the bad UX — while Rod diagnoses the app as a public-health problem, “another cause of the plug slot blues this time of year,” a contributor to grumpy plebs. The value-for-value dependency is real, and so is the grumpiness; the Bugle keeps boosting anyway.
The ambivalence has a paper trail on X. The Bugle’s verdict on its own payment rail, unelaborated, folds the app into the compliance machinery it otherwise runs on: “Fountain needs a compliance department.”
And yet in the same cosmology the app is load-bearing infrastructure for the revolution itself. When “USAID and other CIA funding sources for pro-U.S. Dollar podcasts are being cut off,” the panicked D.C. search terms include “Fountain boosts” alongside V4V, the Lightning wallet, and 40 Hours Per Week — the enemy of Bitcoin filed, without irony, as a pillar of the resistance.

irl: Fountain is a real Podcasting 2.0 app built on the Bitcoin Lightning Network, where listeners stream and “boost” sats to podcasters — which is why the Bugle can route its entire fictional economy through it without inventing anything.
