Henry’s note: the liturgy never says which code, or what defending it entails. That absence is the joke — the sentence is complete without a referent, the way a coat of arms is complete without a battle.

Defending Bitcoin’s honor

The meme’s highest-engagement post drops the code entirely and reaches for chivalry outright: the Cypherknight as a paladin sworn to Bitcoin’s honor, a thing no ledger records.

Cypherpunk vs. Cypherknight

The word is a costume change. Where the cypherpunk was underground, adversarial and dressed for it, the Cypherknight is pageantry — armor, oaths, a coat of arms. Rod Palmer drew the line in a single reply, and it functions as the meme’s cleanest thesis:

The Bugle account pushed the same gap further, catching the Cypherknight in the act of decorating rather than building — the sticker as substitute for the deed.

The armor turns out to have a compliance department. Answering Jameson Lopp, Palmer delivered the meme’s sharpest self-puncture — the knight who, before defending code, clears it with counsel.

The gag rhymes with the Compliance Token ethos: every act of rebellion first routed through legal review.

The creator’s disavowal

Palmer is both the meme’s most prolific hand and its first heckler. A day before the liturgy crystallized, he was already calling the whole order a con — the in-universe author refusing to salute his own creation.
