Monitoring The Situation is an album by Rod Palmer, released 2025, streaming on Wavlake. Its title track debuted alongside Bugle Weekly Ep. 65 — likewise titled “Monitoring The Situation” — and The Bugle promoted it in the flat idiom of the genre: “Another adult contemporary BANGER! by credentialed journalist @rodpalmerhodl.”
Palmer treated the release with the gravity of a chart event. “Whoa this went viral! 🤩 Check out my new Soundcloud hit Monitoring The Situation.”
The doctrine of monitoring the situation
The album lent its name to a durable house creed. Across Rod Palmer, Richard Greaser and the Bugle accounts, “monitoring the situation” is less an activity than a posture — the credentialed journalist’s answer to every developing story, which is to observe it very seriously and act on it not at all. Henry’s note: the phrase predates the song’s cultural peak but the song is what canonized it as a discipline.
Greaser states the occupational thesis plainly: “Being a journalist is making a career out of monitoring the situation.”
Palmer, characteristically, elevates it to epistemology: “most people think they’re monitoring the situation when in reality they’re simply monitoring the consequences of a situation coming to an end.”
The Bugle eventually formalized the practice as a beginner discipline, publishing a listicle of entry-level situations for the aspiring monitor.
“Looking to get into monitoring the situation but don’t know where to begin? We created a list of the top five situations that anyone can start monitoring regardless of their experience or background.”
Weather as the founding situation
The purest form of the practice is meteorological. Palmer names his patron saint of monitoring: “when it comes to monitoring the situation @frankiemacd is one of the best to ever do it. more often than not, frankie knows the weather forecast in my area before i do. many such cases.”
irl: @frankiemacd is Frankie MacDonald, the Cape Breton weather forecaster whose emphatic storm warnings made him an internet fixture — the real-world template for the bit’s earnest-vigilance tone.
Palmer frames his own weather-monitoring as a skill retained through disuse: “i was worried i would be too rusty to monitor last night’s tsunami situation after a month off nothing ever happening but it turns of monitoring the situation is like riding a bike.”
Greaser confirms the practice scales to whole regions: “The whole Midwest is at home because of the storm monitoring the situation.”
Who else is monitoring
The joke’s engine is attribution — the situation is monitored by everyone, always, to no visible effect. Pledditor keeps watch for scams:

The Bugle extends the register to macro finance, casting Ray Dalio as a fellow monitor helpless before the M2 chart.

The group chat and its discontents
The situation is monitored socially, in a dedicated group chat — a detail Greaser finds insufferable even as it persists: “Imagine having to tweet about your monitoring the situation group chat or having to tweet about your group chat in general.”
Palmer treats monitoring as an inheritable duty, to be handed down like a trade: “at what age do you begin to delegate some responsibility for monitoring the situation to your sons?”
And he casts it as a discipline to be recommitted to over lesser pursuits: “no more jestermaxxing. it’s time to lock-in monitoring the situation.”
Henry’s note: the running gag holds because the phrase is a load-bearing non-action — it lets a bitcoin journalist claim vigilance while committing to nothing, which is the whole of the Rod Palmer persona compressed into four words.
