The First Gas Powered Tesla To Roll Off The Line In Austin Texas

Tesla announced a new line of gas-powered cars out of Austin, Texas — a major departure for the electric-vehicle pioneer, and by CEO Elon Musk‘s own account, the point.

“We’ve always believed in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and that includes exploring new ways to piss everyone off,” Musk said in a statement. “I’ve had a lot of fun buying Twitter and watching the entire cathedral have a meltdown over it. I just want to sit in a congressional hearing to get yelled at about this, and say Dogecoin to the moon.”

The gas-powered models will meet Tesla’s usual standards and carry its signature features — autonomous driving, over-the-air software updates — and are expected within a few years, prices and models TBD. Industry analyst John Smith supplied the requisite contrarian gloss: “If they can make gas-powered cars that are more efficient and environmentally friendly than the competition, then that’s just another example of their ingenuity and vision.” The company, meanwhile, urged supporters to remember its ultimate mission remains accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy — whether through electric cars, solar panels, or, now, gasoline.

irl: No gas-powered Tesla exists. The garnish is all real: Musk bought Twitter in October 2022 to institutional meltdown, Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas is in Austin, and in early 2023 Musk was in court over his “funding secured” tweet while still cheerleading Dogecoin, which he had previously done on SNL and in actual litigation.
