Members Of Bitcoin Twitter Urge Pomp To Resume Sponsorships Of Podcast

The earliest known bugle.news dispatch, filed by Richard Greaser, reporting a reversal of sentiment on Bitcoin Twitter toward podcaster Anthony “Pomp” Pompliano.

After taking backlash for accepting sponsorships from multiple companies that were simultaneously filing for bankruptcy and misleading their customers, Pompliano announced he would no longer accept sponsors for his content. The community promptly decided it wanted the ads back. Cory Klippsten led the reappraisal, reasoning that Pomp “provided a valuable service to the general Bitcoin community by highlighting services that individuals should not use,” and crediting him with “a very good track record of supporting products that guarantee you to lose money.”

A petition demanding the resumption of sponsorships gathered over 20,000 signatures. Pompliano made no public response; an anonymous source close to him summarized his position as one in which every available path forward leads to backlash.

The article opens the Pomp sponsorship saga and stands as an early record of Bitcoin Twitter’s ability to reverse its own consensus overnight.

irl: Published January 11, 2023, in the immediate aftermath of the FTX/BlockFi/Celsius collapses. The real Anthony Pompliano had promoted BlockFi and other now-bankrupt lenders on his podcast, making a “Pomp sponsor” shorthand for counterparty risk.
