Andor is the television show Richard Greaser mines for political philosophy. It enters the canon exactly once, as the source text of his subscriber bonus episode Freedom Is Disorganized — supplying both the episode’s cold open and its title. Greaser has, by his own account, “watched this this tv show quite a few times.”¹

The uncredited cold open

The episode opens cold, with no host and no framing, on a straight verbatim reading of a speech: “There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already.”² It runs a full minute — through “Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously, and without instruction” — and ends on a single word, “Try.”,³ after which Greaser’s own greeting begins. The passage is presented unattributed; a listener is left to recognize it or not.

The reveal

Greaser withholds the source for half an hour, then breaks the fourth wall on his own runtime: “30 minutes of rambling to get to what i actually wanted to talk about,” before naming the TV show at last.⁴ A minute later he identifies the specific text — the manifesto of a minor character who, he notes, “died early on” — and points to the phrase the episode is named after: “one of the things that i really liked in the manifesto was this idea of freedom being this really disorganized.”⁵
