+> *Henry's note: rebuilt from the beat index — 120 sampled beats across 86 episodes, coverage SAMPLED. The old members list was a mechanical name-match and has been replaced. This is not every appearance.*
    +
    +**The Bugle** is the Bugleverse's news organization — a Bitcoin-native paper and
+podcast newsroom that publishes at bugle.news and broadcasts as
+[[media/the-bugle-weekly|Bugle Weekly]]. It defines itself in its own cold-open
+liturgy: "The Bugle is easily the most important journalistic institution around
+today. They make up literally everything they write, and yet it is somehow all
+true."[^paradox] The same line opens and closes the first episode, and the
+paradox it states — total fabrication that is nonetheless reporting — is the
+premise the whole outfit runs on.
    +
+It is run by [[characters/richard-greaser|Richard Greaser]], chief editor, with
+[[characters/rod-palmer|Rod Palmer]] as co-host and managing counterpart. Its
+authority rests entirely on one claim, repeated across two years: that its hosts
+are **credentialed journalists**. Asked by a first-time listener whether the show
+was sarcasm, Greaser answered with the sincerest statement of the kayfabe there
    +is — "we're not super beings, we're not gods, we're just" credentialed
+journalists.[^notgods] The Bugle documents the Bitcoin world with a straight
+face; it does not concede that it performs.
    +
+> irl: The Bugle is a real satirical Bitcoin-media project — the paper at
+> bugle.news and the Bugle Weekly podcast — which is why its in-universe reporting
+> and its actual output are the same artifact.
    +
    +## Founding
    +
+Greaser dates the outfit's founding to roughly December 2022, thanking supporters
+for "the past two years" of The Bugle in the 2024 Christmas special.[^twoyears]
+The origin story is alcoholism: he drank himself into liver failure working for a
+legacy news agency — later specified as "the CIA ran media" — and the Bugle was
+born when he took his soul back.[^origin] The mission is stated without irony as
+the whole point of the enterprise: a newspaper exists to push its owner's
+opinions, "which is why all the billionaires each own their own newspaper," and
+that is why he started this one.[^newspaper]
    +
    +## The credentialed-journalist doctrine
    +
+The Bugle's theory of itself is that credentials, not skill, confer the right to
+think: "You don't have the skills if you don't have the credentials," so the
+reader need no longer think for himself.[^credentials] The paper markets the
    +outsourcing of thought as a feature, in a self-ad built as a
+[[characters/joe-rogan|Joe Rogan]] parody: "I had Jamie fact check the bugle and
+he found all their facts were true. Free your mind and let the Bugle do the
    +thinking for you."[^rogan]
    +
+The slogan is an inversion of Infowars': where Alex Jones sold tomorrow's news
+today, the Bugle sells "tomorrow is real news today," justified by front-running —
+"we've been front running the US government… BlackRock… Mark Cuban."[^slogan] The
+adjacent doctrine, stated in the clear, is that the way to escape a fake-news
+accusation is "to make that news happen so that you are right," so you cannot be
    +criticized.[^makenews]
    +
+The show's standing defence against the charge of satire is flat denial. Told by
+a booster the program was satirical, Greaser took offence and insisted the Bugle
+was "a very serious news organization" whose "publishing standards are on par with
+New York Times publishing standards."[^notsatire] The most durable form of the
+denial locates the joke in the world rather than the paper: "we're just reporting
+the news. We're not trying to be funny. The world the world is super gay and
+retarded. We're just reporting the gay and retarded news."[^reporting]
    +
+## Proof-of-work journalism and the PODCONF divorce
    +
    +The Bugle's founding feud is with [[orgs/podconf|PODCONF]], the conference-media
+outfit it had been reporting on before PODCONF "actually approached us to sponsor
+us."[^podconfsponsor] The partnership curdles over Greaser's refusal to file
+compliance paperwork. By episode 13 the paper has "kicked" PODCONF to the side and
+stopped running its ads, ignoring a reply "full of legalese" — a breakup made
+survivable by the [[orgs/intellectual-silk-road|Intellectual Silk Road]], the
+value-for-value backend that lets the Bugle break its sponsor contract.[^kicked]
+The separation is confirmed on air two episodes later by a
+[[characters/fundamentals|Fundamentals]] boost congratulating the show, to which
+Greaser answers with a house self-description: "We're the Bitcoin standard of
    +news."[^separation]
    +
+The feud is then reframed as ideology. The Bugle recasts journalists as "the new
+cypherpunks," "battling against PodConf and other institutions that want wanna
+spread disinformation."[^cypherpunk] The paper's willingness to be blamed for its
+own reporting becomes a running feature: when a PODCONF outlet blamed the Bugle
+for the 38th assassinated Mexican politician, Rod issued an on-air denial — "We
    +did not sanction it."[^assassination]
    +
    +## The newsroom
    +
+The Bugle's masthead surfaces on air in fragments. [[characters/kailey-welch|Kailey
+Welch]] is the "smoking hot vape producer,"[^vape] a hiring Greaser credits with
+letting the show level up; [[characters/maggie-morris|Maggie Morris]] and
+[[characters/wayne-curr|Wayne Curr]] are named as the writers put on assignment.[^masthead]
+The newsroom's internal politics are played entirely straight as news: a
+dress-code war pits Maggie (pantsuits) against Kailey (dresses), argued on the
+grounds of whose appearance is more distracting to the men.[^dresscode] The
+newsroom's progressivism is desk smoking — "we allow people to smoke at their
+desks and they don't have to go outside" — with 24/7 smoke-pit livestreams
+floated to capture the luminary conversations happening there.[^desksmoking]
    +
+The paper broadcasts from "the Beagle newsroom in a secret location in New York
+City,"[^secretloc] a conceit Greaser also mythologizes as **Grieser's Gulch** —
+the Bugle media empire recast as John Galt's Gulch with himself in the Galt
+role.[^gulch] The hiring philosophy is generational: over listener complaints
+about the flamboyant [[characters/rudy-dazzleworth|Rudy Dazzleworth]], Greaser
+states the strategy outright — a media organization must bet on the Zoomers, not
    +Gen X, so "Rudy's here to stay."[^rudy]
    +
    +## Funding
    +
+The Bugle is value-for-value: "we get our funding from you. We don't get our
+funding from USAID. We don't get it from Tether."[^usaid] The house doctrine is
+listener funding, restated as boilerplate — "The Bugle operates off of listener
+funding."[^listener] Booster revenue, denominated in-universe as "cigarette
+money," is tithed: the show donates 10% of boosts to the Samourai legal defense
+fund and points listeners to p2prights.org.[^samourai] Outside revenue arrives in
+kind — [[characters/barnminer|Barnminer]] routes his monthly jerky proceeds,
+100,000 sats, to the paper, which Rod immediately re-denominates in USDT "for the
+tax."[^jerky] The late-era ask folds funding into the show's own vocabulary: the
+hosts refuse to use AI to glaze themselves, so booster glaze is the only glaze
+they take — "Tell your friends to Glaze the bugle."[^glaze] The doctrine
+carries over verbatim to the timeline, where Greaser reduces the whole enterprise
+to it — "The Bugle is what it is because we are value for value." — and Rod frames
+the boost not as charity but as wage: "Boosting sats to The Bugle on @fountain_app
+is what enables us to provide for our families."[^v4vposts]
    +
    +## Institutional ambitions
    +
+The Bugle continually spawns in-universe institutions. It founds **The Bugles**, a
+live-streamed January awards show with real trophies, justified by the claim that
+the CIA built the Academy Awards to reward its own content and "Bitcoiners deserve
+one."[^bugles] It runs the annual [[storylines/maxi-madness|Maxi Madness]]
+influencer bracket, and treats it as property worth defending: Rod's central
+conspiracy is that PODCONF is stoking timeline vitriol in order to "steal Maxi
+Madness" and box the Bugle out of its own tournament.[^maxisteal] It maintains a
+crowd-updated **Dennis Porter Facts page** at bugle.news, a real in-universe
    +publication tracking [[characters/dennis-porter|Dennis Porter]].[^dpfacts] It
+founds the **Orange Cross**, an initiative to run care packages to imprisoned
    +Bitcoiners.[^orangecross]
    +
+The 2025 expansion is physical and on-chain. The Bugle stages **Satirize the
+System** at the Nerd Bar on Fremont Street — billed as its "first ever live
+show."[^satirize] It teases a Bitcoin trading-card game, half-bleeped on air, that
+Greaser refuses to confirm until there is "something shippable."[^cards] It commits
+publicly to inscribing "a bugle, inscription" on chain, with Rod anticipating the
+blowback.[^inscription] Censored on GitHub during the Core-versus-Knots war, Rod
+declares the Bugle will "launch a, Bugle soft fork" of Bitcoin itself.[^softfork]
+And it stages a funeral for Bitcoin — Rod's eulogy, "We are gathered here today to
+mourn the passing of bitcoin, aged 16."[^funeral]
    +
    +## The Pledditor imagery
    +
    +The Bugle's campaign against [[characters/pledditor|Pledditor]] runs on
+manufactured imagery. The Santa gag has "everyone at the bugle" receiving coal
+"because Pleditor is a little bitch and doesn't respect credentialed
+journalism."[^coal] The imagery escapes the show: a guest reports that the Bugle's
+AI portrait of Pledditor as an overweight basement dweller "sitting amongst his,
+like, Pokemon toys" overwrote his own mental picture of the man entirely.[^aipledditor]
    +
    +## The later era
    +
+By 2025–26 the Bugle has hardened into a stance. It refuses the term "independent
+media" as plebslopped to death and brands itself "the non CIA media."[^noncia]
+Redwing's tribute states its beat as tabloid rather than macro — "the personal
+lives of Bitcoin podcasters and influencers," Bitcoin's New York Post and Perez
+Hilton.[^perez] Its editorial creed is stated as distrust: "we don't want the
+plebs to trust the bugle… we don't want the plebs to trust us," the point being
+that it never asked for your trust.[^distrust] A black-pilled guest supplies the
+mythology from outside: the Bugle is "one of the the last bastions, if not the
+last bastion of actual signal in the space."[^bastion]
    +
+The business model splits voice from text. The paywalled premium content is read
+aloud, while the writing stays free — bugle.news, "where you can read the whole
+thing without a paywall," an inversion where the words cost nothing and the voice
    +costs money.[^paywall]
    +
    +## The @bitcoin_bugle voice
    +
+The newsroom's on-air liturgy has a second, faster body of work: the posts. The
    +flagship @bitcoin_bugle account — with [[characters/richard-greaser|Greaser]]'s and
+[[characters/rod-palmer|Rod]]'s personal handles as the editorial column — carries
+the same premise the cold open states, that total fabrication is nonetheless
+reporting, but compressed into the grammar of a wire service. The house style is
+the breathless bulletin. Nearly every post opens with a siren and a dateline —
+"MASSIVE BREAKING," "JUST IN," "BREAKING" — and the paper is forever *following*
+the story rather than closing it: "The Bugle has a big story breaking tomorrow."
    +
+> "MASSIVE BREAKING: 🦢 @Swan is reportedly considering pursuing Ross Ulbricht to become the new host of their Swan Signal Bitcoin Podcast when he's pardoned by President Elect @realDonaldTrump in January. The Bugle is following the breaking development.."
    +> — [@bitcoin_bugle, 2024-11-06](https://x.com/bitcoin_bugle/status/1854260947415941336)
    +
+The dateline is often a stakeout. The account files itself *on location* — "The
+Bugle is on location in Lugano with a gaggle of bitcoin podcasters and other
+members of the press all waiting for [[characters/dennis-porter|Dennis Porter]]'s
+arrival" — the joke being that the whole press corps has flown in to cover an
    +announcement nobody has made yet.[^lugano]
    +
    +![](/tweets/1854260947415941336-0.jpg)
    +
    +### The listicle beat
    +
+The dominant format is the ranked list — the paper's straight-faced answer to the
+question of what a Bitcoin newsroom is *for*. It publishes standings for everything:
+a **Bitcoin Core Dev Power Rankings**, and then, at the height of the Core-versus-Knots
+war, a rival **Knots Dev power rankings** justified in the language of consent.
    +
+> "🚨BREAKING: The Bugle's first ever Knots Dev power rankings are out! Moving forward, The Bugle will publish dev power rankings for both projects so node runners can make informed consent before letting JPEGS touch their nodes."
    +> — [@bitcoin_bugle, 2025-05-16](https://x.com/bitcoin_bugle/status/1923408302098051104)
    +
    +![](/tweets/1923408302098051104-0.jpg)
    +
+The list is also where the paper does its taxonomy of the audience. Its single most
+engaged post is not news at all but an ethnography: a thread sorting the readership
    +into twelve species of [[memes/pleb-slop|pleb]].
    +
+> "🧵IMPORTANT THREAD🧵 The Bugle has been researching the different types of plebs and has distilled them down to 12 different Archetypes. Let us know which archetype you relate to the most."
    +> — [@bitcoin_bugle, 2026-02-09](https://x.com/bitcoin_bugle/status/2020968013835726991)
    +
    +![](/tweets/2020968013835726991-0.jpg)
    +
+The bylines are staffed to match the beat. The paper credits its **Ten Hottest
+Feds** to "@CryptoEpstein and @MARSMEATBARS,"[^feds] and attributes the **Bitcoin
+Podcast Bechdel Test** to "The Bugle's senior credentialed feminist @CryptoEpstein" —
+the masthead's absurd titles ("senior credentialed feminist") doing the same work
    +the [[#the-credentialed-journalist-doctrine|credential doctrine]] does on air.[^bechdel]
+Rankings of people run the same deadpan: a "Top 10 smartest people in Bitcoin," a
+grid of "the most important political power brokers."[^smartest]
    +
    +### The persecution wire
    +
+The other recurring genre is the martyrdom bulletin. Every block, note, or
+shadowban is filed as evidence of the paper's own importance — the logic being that
+only real journalism gets suppressed. When an account blocked the paper, it became a
+headline: "T.I.N.A. just blocked the Bugle for performing good quality journalism.
+What does that say about T.I.N.A?"[^tina] Greaser keeps the enemies list in public.
    +
+> "People off the top of my head who have blocked the Bugle: -Joe Nakamoto -Preston Pysh -Matthew Kratter -[[characters/pledditor|Pledditor]]"
    +> — [@GreaserRichard, 2025-05-20](https://x.com/GreaserRichard/status/1924804531503706248)
    +
+A Community Note is treated as a hostile credential-check, answered with the doctrine
+turned outward — the paper does not recognize the credentials of whoever noted it.
    +
+> "The shitcoin community has weaponized Community Notes against The Bugle. We do not recognize the credentials of the anonymous X*P bot who initiated this action."
    +> — [@bitcoin_bugle, 2025-01-28](https://x.com/bitcoin_bugle/status/1884358999451316249)
    +
    +![](/tweets/1884358999451316249-0.jpg)
    +
+The [[bits/shadowban-complaints|shadowban]] is the standing grievance, and the
+"non CIA controlled media" self-brand is its explanation — "Yo so being a good non
+CIA controlled media platform, we are shadowbanned."[^shadowban] The same reflex
+scales up: the paper stands "in solidarity with @simplybitcoin" against "CIA
    +controlled platforms like YouTube."[^simply]
    +
    +### The compliance desk
    +
+The [[storylines/church-of-compliance|compliance]] satire the show runs on air is a
+full editorial franchise on the timeline, complete with registered trademarks. The
+paper co-brands **Compliance Pride Month®** and **Profiles in Compliance®** with the
+very outfit it feuds with, [[orgs/podconf|PODCONF]] — the détente memorialized when
+it declared it "now safe for @_podconf employees, influencers, and podcasters to
+like The Bugle's tweets ✅."[^safe] By 2025 the bit had a governing body.
    +
+> "🚨 ANNOUNCEMENT. You complained and we heard you! That's why The Bugle has teamed up to form the Compliance Committee Partnership (CCP). The CCP will be in charge of [[storylines/maxi-madness|Maxi Madness]] 2026. They will enact full KYC/AML, stand up a new HR department and ensure no more shenanigans!"
    +> — [@bitcoin_bugle, 2025-04-01](https://x.com/bitcoin_bugle/status/1907124038431830480)
    +
    +![](/tweets/1907124038431830480-0.jpg)
    +
+*Henry's note: the funding doctrine is the one place the posts speak plainly. The
+value-for-value line the show reads as boilerplate is stated on the timeline as the
+paper's whole identity — Greaser's "The Bugle is what it is because we are value for
+value" — and the persecution wire is its mirror image, since a paper that takes no
+CIA money must explain its poor reach some other way. The two genres are the same
    +argument told twice.*
    +
    +![](/tweets/1931561919996940636-0.jpg)
    +
    +## Note on the name
    +
+The ASR cannot spell the paper. It appears most often as **the Beagle**, and as
+**Beagle News**, **Beagle Wegley**, **Beagle newsroom**, **the pupil**, and
+**Eagle Weekly** — with **Bitcoin Bugle** and **Grieser's Gulch** the in-universe
+alternates. A name-match scan over this corpus is unreliable; the `aliases:` exist
+so the next pass does not lose the outfit that names the universe.
    +
    +[^paradox]: [[transcripts/out-complying-the-competition-bugle-weekly-episode-1#t-57|Bugle Weekly 1 @ 0:57]] — repeated verbatim as the outro sting at t=4258.
    +[^notgods]: [[transcripts/the-intellectual-silk-road-bugle-weekly-episode-13#t-3334|Bugle Weekly 13 @ 55:34]] — quote spans into the next cue, "credentialed journalists" (t=3338).
+[^twoyears]: [[transcripts/bugle-christmas-special#t-774|Bugle Christmas Special @ 12:54]] — "I wanna thank everyone who supported The Bugle over the past two years."
